How to get to the Altas Rivers

Access routes: airports, narrow-gauge railway, and main roads

ACCESS TO GALICIAN NORTH

The coastline of the Altas Rivers requires a logistical planning focused on geographical dispersion. While A Coruña and Ferrol act as the major entry nodes by air and rail, the deployment to capes and cliffs necessarily requires combining regional buses or having one's own vehicle.

Plane

A Coruña Airport (Alvedro) is the closest natural entry point to the region. From its terminal, it is necessary to connect with the city's bus station or take the train to Ferrol to venture into the municipalities of the northern coast.

Train

Ferrol is the terminal station of the classic network. The picturesque narrow-gauge line (FEVE) operated by Renfe stands out, which runs along the entire Cantabrian coast to Gijón.

FEVE Key Stops

  • A Mariña Lucense: Stop in Ribadeo.
  • Northern Coast: Stop in Viveiro.

Bus

Monbus and Arriva share the connectivity. Monbus connects the capitals towards Ferrol, while Arriva directly penetrates to Pontedeume.

  •  Routes to Capes: Ferrol - Cedeira - Cariño (Monbus)

Car

It is the optimal option. The AP-9 motorway quickly connects to Ferrol, while the Cantabrian A-8 highway provides access via Ribadeo. A private vehicle is essential for visiting cliffs and beaches that are far from public transport, saving hours of travel.

Mapping the North

The topography of the Rías Altas is intricate. Check the roads; routes that appear visually short on the map can take twice as long due to the winding coastal roads.
