The Christmas lights transform the streets of Vigo into a route to enjoy on foot. This guide gathers ideas to organize your visit and make the most of your stay beyond the lighting.
When were the lights first turned on in Vigo?
When did this story of Vigo and the Christmas lights begin? In 2014, the Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, decided to install a 27-meter tall illuminated tree in the city center, in addition to lighting up the streets, as had been the tradition. Seven years later, the tree has grown to 35.5 meters, Vigo lights up with 11 million LED lights, including attractions like the giant Ferris wheel, the gift, the snowman, the ball, and numerous photo-ops inviting selfies or pictures.
Yes, we know this is the reason you come to Vigo at Christmas, and we want to make the most of it. No less than for you to get to know the city. Because Vigo has more to offer than just Christmas lights. It has a long history, a privileged location, and luxury gastronomy. That's why we created this proposal: a 2-hour tour of the city center, which ends right at the time of the daily lighting. Of course, after two hours of walking, we invite you to rest. We have a reservation at the best bar in front of the tree, where, besides resting our legs for a while, we will enjoy a good Galician sparkling wine. And then, what? Well, Vigo remains fully illuminated and at your disposal. The best plan.

The precursor of the lights in Vigo
Don't think that Abel Caballero was the first mayor to turn on the lights in the city. Many years before, another mayor turned on lights in Vigo, and it was also during the Christmas season. On December 22, 1896, Mayor Ozores turned on the first public electric lights in the city of Vigo. They illuminated the current streets Colón, Policarpo Sanz, and Puerta del Sol. A little-known precedent, of which we have the central lamp of the Plaza de la Constitución left as a reminder, which is a replica of the originals. Did you know that?
In the tour, you will learn more details about Vigo, the lights, and Christmas.
