Lugo combines Roman heritage, historic streets, and a cuisine with its own identity. This two-day itinerary includes visits and suggestions to discover the city and organize your stay.
2 days in Lugo
Day 1
- Visit the Interpretation Center of the Wall, opposite the Praza del Campo. It's the best way to start if you're going without a guide, because there you'll learn about its history and the characteristics of its construction.
- Walk along the Wall by its walkway. The total perimeter is just over 2 km.
- Visit the Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, next to the Puerta de Santiago of the Wall, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Take a walk through the city within the walls. It's always advisable to join a guided tour in a city with so much history. Don't miss: the Puerta Miña, the San Pedro and Falsa gates, the Church of San Froilán, the Town Hall, the Convent of Santo Domingo…
- stroll through the Plaza Mayor, and grab something to drink at the historic Café del Centro, or at one of the terraces in the Plaza.
- If you're in the mood for art, just across the square is the Círculo de las Artes (free entrance).
- Don't forget to take a walk also along the outside of the wall. At night it is illuminated.
Day 2
- Today we explore more Roman Lugo: start the day with a visit to the House of Mosaics, remnants of a large domus or Roman noble house; or in the Sala Porta Miña, with a permanent exhibit on Roman Lugo. Both spaces are located within the city walls.
- Visit the ancient baths, on the left bank of the Miño river.
- Take a pleasant walk between the Roman Bridge (reconstructed) and the San Lázaro Walkway. The bridge was part of the XIX road, which connected Lucus Augusti with Bracara Augusta (now Braga, Portugal).
- In the afternoon, visit Santa Eulalia de Bóveda, a late Roman treasure just 20 minutes by car (it is advisable to go with a guide).
- In the same village, a walking circular route begins (about 5 km approx.).
What to eat
Lugo is a gastronomic paradise. Not only for the quality but also for the generosity of its dishes. In the wine bars, they offer free tapas to choose from. It is almost a must to try the cheese from Cebreiro and San Simón, both with D.O. If you choose to eat from a plate, I would recommend a veal dish: steak or chop accompanied by greens or chestnut puree. If it's cold, a good Galician stew is a memorable dish to end these 2 days in Lugo.
To drink, Ribeira Sacra, and for dessert: cheese with honey or some chestnut cake.
Practical information
- the most convenient thing is to leave the car in some parking intramuros. Finding free parking in the surroundings may require climbing steep hills.
- the Bus Station is located right in front of the Wall.
- the Train Station is a bit far away, and uphill towards the city intramuros.
- both the visit to the Wall and the Cathedral are (for now) free. Don't miss them!
- you will find restrooms in the Market or in the nearby Bus Station.
The best experience
«Walk the complete round promenade. It allows you to see Lugo from above and also, travel back in time. It is the only complete Roman wall from its period in the world. Don’t let it pass by.»
